Task Definition:

  • Determine the nature of the information problem; define the problem for the information search
  • Choose a topic which is appropriate for the information task assigned by the teacher, has material available, is neither too broad or too narrow for the demands of the assisgnment

Information-seeking Strategies:

  • Pre-search
  • Make a preliminary search of sources
  • Determine the types of sources and strategies for acquiring the sources to meet the defined information
  • Check a general encyclopedia (if (appropriate) to get enough basic information about a topic, to understand what is to be read, and to help relate research to prior knowledge of topic to organize a search

  • Location is the ability to find a range of information sources to meet a defined task
  • Access is the ability to retrieve sources as well as specific information from the sources

Use of Information:

  • Expand preliminary source search into full working "works consulted" list
  • Create "works consulted" cards for note-taking; note-taking skills
  • Learn what to put on a "works consulted" card

The MLA style of documentation is to be used: (use of a modified form of documentation may be used for certain grades and/or levels)

  • Know what needs to be documented
  • Know how to document in the MLA Style
  • Learn the proper form for: internal documentation (parenthetical references), "Works Cited" or "Works Consulted," finish copy specifications
