Great American Smokeout |
![]() |
The American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout is Thursday November 17th. In an effort to get tobacco users to quit Mrs. Cowen-Wilson's Health Classes did sidewalk grafiti. Students were assigned to one of fifteen different facts about the dangers of smoking. They then took a walk and wrote messages on the sidewalks. Most outlined a body and wrote facts around that. A few went off script such as CJ Rische with his "A Pack A Day Keeps Doctors Paid" message. One class went up Leroy St to the Museum and Rescue Squad, another class targeted CPH, and the last class targeted Market St. |

October 13, 2011: SSgt Joshua Fountain, the local Airforce Recruiter presented three of the Class of 2012 seniors with their official certificate of acceptance into the United States Air Force. When some one meets the strenuous requirements to join the United States Air Force as a High School Junior, they join and get there job over the summer. Once anyone joins the Air Force they are automatically enrolled in the Community College of the Air Force and the program of study is whatever there job is. This Degree is an A.A.S. and most Airman complete this two year degree in about a year if they are motivated. The Air Force is the only branch with its own college. The college has regional accreditation, and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Congratulations to our new recruits who will leave for basic training after graduation. |

Kids Battle Germs With Scrubby BearBENNY FAIRCHILD WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2011 POTSDAM - Sixteen teams of seniors from Potsdam Central School have been working with elementary students this week as part of the American Red Cross' 'Scrubby Bear' program.
|
|---|---|
"Scrubby Bear is designed to teach kids how to wash their hands and about germs," said Megan M. Fulton, an Americorps volunteer working with the Red Cross. "The goal is to prevent them from getting sick and help reduce absences in school." Before becoming instructors for the program. each of the seniors in the district's civic's class went through a week a training, "We were with the senior class for a whole week," Ms. Fulton said. "We taught them on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday then on Thursday and Friday we had them prepare lessons and teach us." One team of students included Lia Davis, Liam Rice, Sam Bunstone, Ryan Boldt and Jesse Oakes. They were working with students in Kathleen Cruikshank's kindergarten class on Tuesday. "We don't like bad germs. They make us sick," Ms. Davis said. "Can anyone tell me what soap does to germs?" she asked, before students in the class replied, "It kills them!" Mr. Boldt told students "Today we're going to show you what good germs looks like." He then walked around the class room with a bag of powder for each of the kids to dip their hands in. After rubbing the powder into their hands, Mr. Rice walked around the room with a black light, shining it on each of the children's hands. "Can everyone see the germs?" he asked. Students were then split into groups to wash their hands, before Mr. Rice walked around the room with a black light one more time. "Now we're going to show you that the germs are all gone," Ms. Davis said. "Remember washing your hands always kills germs. It's a good way to prevent sickness." After washing their hands, students were then treated to some time with "Scrubby Bear," a teddy bear that was then passed around room. "The kids love it," Ms. Fulton said. "It teaches them in a fun way and allows them to interact with high school students, whom they look up to." Ms. Fulton said this is the second year for the program in Potsdam, which last year trained more than 350 students countywide. Scrubby Bear SlideshowCourtesy of the Courier-Observer |
